  1. Low-Rise, Mid-Rise & Full-Rise Scissor Lifts: These are perfect for smaller work areas and jobs that don’t require a high lift and for low ceiling garages. The lift takes up very little space, and has the capability to lift up to 10,0000 lbs. The lift usually will support the vehicle by the frame and is powered by an electric-hydraulic power unit. They do not require to be permanently installed, so if they need to be moved around the shop to create more space for other jobs, these can be moved to a different location. These types of lifts are perfect for jobs that require very little height increase like oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, etc. Mid-rise lifts will usually go up to 48” when fully extended, unlike the low-rise lifts which usually go 24”. 

  2. Two-Post Lifts: The two-post lift is a surface mounted lift, and these will require a garage that allows for a higher clearance. These lifts are two posts that are elevated by hydraulic and/or electric power. Depending on the brand, they will have all different weight ratings anywhere from 8k to 30k lbs. Whether you’re doing passenger vehicles or commercial heavy duty, just make sure you choose the one right for your jobs.

  3. Four-Post Lifts: These lifts allow the vehicle to be driven onto the runway and the vehicle will be lifted by the tires. This is opposed to the two-post lift which is lifted under the frame of the vehicle. Just like the two-post lift, these would require a higher height clearance in the garage. This type of lift will usually be rated for a heavier load capacity. 

  4. EV Battery Lift Tables: Within the recent years, the Electric Vehicle market has really grown. This type of lift is designed similar to the scissor lift and is to be used in conjunction with a car lift that has the ability to lift the vehicle to the proper height. These lifts will range from 2,000 to 4,000 lbs ratings. They have the ability to maneuver around the garage with the wheels that are installed at the bottom of the lift. They are not only used for batteries, but also engines, transmissions and anything else that would require a heavy lifting application. 

  5. Alignment Lifts: Depending on your market and garage space, this is more of a specialty lift. Though it can be used for other purposes, this will take up floor space. This lift has plates/turntables that are used to align the wheels of the vehicle. 

So, as you can see, there is a wide variety of options to choose from. These are not the only car lifts on the market, so make sure you do your research. Making sure your garage has the right equipment for your needs will be key. Do your research, even if that means visiting and speaking to other mechanic shops. Getting a good understanding of how these lifts will work from the business owner’s perspective would be ideal.
